Kia ora koutou

As we put together this article it is the beginning of Te Wiki o te Reo Maori. Te Reo Maori is considered a national taonga and is one of our three official languages in Aotearoa, alongside sign language and English. Although Te Wiki o te Reo Maori will be long past when this edition comes out it is a good reminder that even if we do not speak fluently we can very easily substitute Maori words in place of English words in sentences. There are many that we already use without even thinking about it: oh no im late for mahi!, what am i going to have for kai today”.
By using simple words and phrases in everyday conversation and making an effort to get pronunciation right we can contribute to keeping this beautiful language alive.

Speaking of mahi, one of our most valued staff members is leaving us at the end of September, Marlene Johnson is off to ride the countryside on her Harley with husband Paul and find new adventures.

Marlene has been an important part of the CILT team since 2011 when she joined us as coordinator of the Community Max programme – working with 16-24 year olds undertaking work experience in the community. Inspired by the positive social impact that this role had on the community, Marlene moved on to other roles within CILT – today she is the Kiwi Can Coordinator, Operations Manager and also keeping us safe as the Health and Safety manager.

Marlene’s aroha and mana, and her straight talking, straight up manner is a real asset when there are a lot of people and projects to juggle, and essential to keeping our more than 15 programmes on track.

Ka pai Marlene, tēnā rawa atu koe. You will be very missed around the office, we wish you all the best on your next adventure.

Tūao Hiahiatia – Volunteers Wanted

We are looking for keen tūao – volunteers  – to help in both of our stores; The Bizarre, our wonderful community re-sale shop; and The Goldmine, Coromandel Reuse Centre

Tasks include such things as assisting customers, creating displays, cash handling, general tidying, and greeting people with a smile! Hours can be set to suit you, although we are especially hoping to fill some Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon slots. Just pop in for a chat, all welcome, smiles guaranteed!

Volunteering in either of our stores is a great way to meet interesting people, gain new skills and contribute to something that has a hugely positive impact on our environment. We are a fun team of positive people that enjoy making someone’s day.

If you have time to give – anything from a full day to even just a couple of hours per week – do get in touch. Phone: 07 8668358
